Imam Khomeini, the founding leader of the Islamic Republic spent nearly 15 years in exile before making a historic return in 1979 to his homeland Iran. He spent most of the exile time in Najaf.
During his stay at Najaf, he used to pay homage at the holy shrine of Imam Ali (PBUH), the truthful successor of the holy prophet of Islam, every day early morning, and this trend and schedule continued for several years.
Imam Khomeini had great devotion towards Imam Ali (PBUH) and other infallible members of the household of the holy prophet of Islam, and decorated himself with divine characteristic and excellent moral values.
Friends and relatives say great spiritual transformation had happened for Imam Khomeini at the holy shrine during his stay in Najaf.
The Islamic revolution which emerged victorious under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini has had deep roots in Ashura, and was closely associated with message of divine messengers and their successors and followers.
